Inspiration

Craig McDean for Another Magazine

Fantastic images, love every detail. Craig McDean is incredible. This editorial is from the September 2008 issue of Another. Styled by Marie Amalie Sauve, featuring models Amanda Laine, Bridget Hall, Guinevere van Seenus, Han Hye Jin, Jessica Stam,  Kinga Rajzak, Missy Rayder, Siri Tollerod, Suvi Koponen, Taryn Davidson, and Tasha Tilberg. Dreamy, or trippy actually, this pictorial is like a world from the mind of an artist gone mad. Every shot can be an art piece on its own, I would actually love to decorate my walls with these. Look at the detail of the jacket in the fifth image down, amazing.

Fashion Icon – Annie Lennox

Annie Lennox is a great example of a strong woman who does what she thinks is right and who conquered the world with confidence and sheer talent. This season, with the popularity of menswear-inspired womenswear, Lennox is the perfect fashion muse to look to. The current trend of tuxedo jackets is something she has been doing since the eighties. Recently she has turned all her attention to activism, like her SING charity witch raises funds for HIV/AIDS education and treatment. She is also not the only Lennox in the fashion world anymore, her daughter Tali Lennox is now modeling and has already been in a Burberry campaign.

Another Art Book

AnOther Magazine has released the third and final edition of Another Art Book. The art books feature images from the archives of AnOther Magazine, all of them from artistic projects commissioned for the pages of the magazine. The books include works by Ernesto Caivano, Jake & Dinos Chapman, Hans Peter Feldmann, Urs Fischer, Yayoi Kusama, Damien Hirst, Yoshitomo Nara, and Keith Tyson. It’s a fantastic collection of iconic images from the art and fashion worlds.

V Magazine Spain – Go Wild!

Crazy fierce editorial from V Magazine Spain April 2010 issue. Model Masha Novoselova, photographed by Txema Yeste. Masha is fantastic. The energy that a story titled “Go Wild!” really needs to live up to its name is definitely there, Masha has this scary intensity in her eyes and her poses show no inhibition. She can’t be tamed.

Sasha Pivovarova for Vogue Japan August 2011 by Hedi Slimane

Hedi Slimane’s photography has really captured the attention of the fashion world. His work is truly iconic. This pictorial, titled “Tough Love”, is featured in the August 2011 issue of Vogue Japan, it stars Sasha Pivovarova. Hedi had also photographed Sasha for Paris Vogue back in 2008, that editorial is still one of my all-time favorites. This one is styled by Mika Mizutani, incorporating pieces from Balenciaga, Yves Saint Laurent, Rick Owens, and Haider Ackermann.

Frances Bean Cobain by Hedi Slimane

Frances Bean Cobain is the daughter of Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love, she is now 18, and ready to step out on her own. Hedi Slimane did this shoot with her, and the pictures are amazing. Frances got her father’s beautiful eyes and her mother’s pouty lips, in other words, she is gorgeous. In the shoot she really pays homage to her parents, and looks every bit the teenage offspring of two grunge icons. I can’t wait to see more of her.

Love Magazine Issue #6 Fall/Winter 2011

Photographers Mert and Marcus may have outdone themselves in the Fall/Winter issue of Love Magazine. They shot 8 covers for the issue featuring Chloe Moretz, Elle Fanning, Hailee Steinfeld, Nyasha Matonhodze, Lara Stone, Mariacarla Boscono, Kristen McMenamy, and Daphne Groeneveld. The styling is by Katie Grand, Arianne Phillips, and Panos Yiapanis. The issue is titled Super Natural, and it definitely has a fairy tale theme. The covers are beautiful and the editorial shots inside do not disappoint.

Vogue Paris August 2011 – Escape to LA

There is an insane 65-page pictorial in the August 2011 issue of French Vogue. It’s titled “Escape to LA” as the whole thing was shot in Los Angeles. The model cast for the spread is as mind-blowing as it’s length, it includes Lara Stone (official current goddess of French Vogue), Arizona Muse, Natasha Poly, Isabeli Fontana, Raquel Zimmermann, and our girl, Freja Beha Erichsen. It was shot by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin. Each model has her own setting and style, each one different from the others. It’s hard to pick a favorite. Instead, I’m posting a shot from each model’s pictorial, and maybe a couple more that I just can’t bear not posting.

Amy Winehouse – In Memory of a Brilliant Talent

By now the news of the passing of Amy Winehouse has made its way around the world, and I’m sure many of you are as grief-stricken as I am. This is my little memorial for the talented and tragic Amy.

She was one of the stars who captured the attention of the world. Her music is original and yet, nostalgic. It’s real, it has much emotion and it speaks of a person who isn’t perfect, a person who struggles with many issues, and hurts deeply. And, her music is beautiful. It has brought me a great amount of pleasure, and I feel consoled in that we will always have at least this much of her.

Her impact on fashion was enormous. Everyone knows her look, and a great number of designers and stylists emulated it, over many seasons. She has earned her place as a fashion icon, with the likes of Kurt Cobain, who passed away at the same age as Amy, 27. Actually, 27 is the age at which many great musical icons have left us, including Jimmy Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Jim Morrison. I keep thinking of the lyrics from “Front Row” by Metric,

“Burnout stars they shine so bright…”

V Magazine #71 – Butoh In Black

Very surreal and haunting editorial, brings to mind Japanese horror films, very beautiful. Models Sui He and Aline Weber, photographed by Glen Luchford, styled by Beat Bolliger.

Ros Georgiou for AMICA Magazine

Ros Georgiou is another rising star of the modeling world. This is an editorial spread from the June 2011 issue of AMICA Magazine. Love the look of the strong eyebrows and the natural-looking volume of her hair.

V Magazine #71 – Girls On Top

There is so much great stuff in the 71st (spring/summer 2011) issue of V Magazine, I don’t even know where to start. This editorial titled “Girls On Top” features models Fei Fei Sun, Liu Wen, Tao Okamoto, and Shu Pei. It’s shot by Terry Tsiolis and styled by Jay Massacret. I love the styling, great strong pieces without many accessories make for outfits with confidence.

Erin Wasson – Summer of Rock

This spread would have been very appropriate to post on Independence Day, however, I hadn’t seen it until last night. This editorial is from Elle France, the June 2011 issue. Shot by Fred Meylan, styled by Anne Marie Brouillet. It’s titled Summer of Rock and it definitely has a Janis Joplin/Americana theme. Erin Wasson is perfect for this spread, this Texas native is the quintessential cool American chick. She makes a great representative of American style.

Happy 4th of July Ryggrad girls!

Abbey Lee Kershaw in Exit Magazine 2010

Feeling a little teen angst from this editorial, and loving the styling.

Daphne Groeneveld & Andrej Pejic in Vogue Paris

Very powerful and captivating editorial titled “Rive Gauche et Libre”, shot by Mert & Marcus (Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott) for Vogue Paris September 2010 issue. Featuring models Malgosia Bela, Daphne Groeneveld, Andrej Pejic, Josh Parkinson, and Lea T. Styled by Carine Roitfeld. The title translated is “Left Bank and Free”, “left bank” refers to the region of Paris that is a mecca for young artists, and “free” to the freedom from the confignment of traditional sexual roles in society. The editorial celebrates androgyny, the blurring of the line between what is feminine and masculine. The stand out pages to me were the ones featuring Daphne and Andrej. The images of Andrej from this spread have become almost iconic, the image with the rose is as recognizable as his very controversial Dossier ad, that caused such a stir.

Back To School – V Magazine Spain Summer 2011

For their summer issue V Magazine Spain did a great editorial with a retro cheeky schoolgirl theme, and they got all the newest cool chics of the modeling world to be in it. Codie Young, Hannah Noble, Ros Georgou, Annabella Tsaboukas, Kate King, Marique Schimmel, Maud Welzen, Kat Hessen, and our favorite, Ruby Aldridge. Shot by Terry Tsiolis. These are my five favorite pages.

Tilda Swinton in Another Magazine

This isn’t exactly recent but it’s worth looking at if you haven’t seen it already. This editorial from Another Magazine Spring 2009 issue features English actress Tilda Swinton. Swinton portrays the witch in the Chronicles of Narnia, and the angel Gabriel in Constantine. She definitely has an ethereal quality to her that captures the imagination, and this editorial is breath-taking. Shot by Craig McDean.

Fashion Mag Favorites – Anja Rubik in Viva Moda

Completely adore supermodel Anja Rubik. This is such a cool editorial, it’s mysterious, has a retro feel, and every image is captivating. Shot by Victor Demcarchelier. Featured in the February 2011 issue of Viva Moda.

Fashion Mag Favorites – Numéro #124 June/July

Editorial titled “Tribal” from the Numéro magazine’s 124th issue is so good. Model Hailey Clauson, shot by Sebastian Kim, styled by Charles Varenne. Love, love, love…

Naty Chabanenko for Cushnie et Ochs Spring 2011 Campaign

This is a great lookbook, the photography really takes you into a different world, that’s gritty and beautiful. Shot by Hugh Lippe.

Coco Rocha by Jean Paul Gaultier

Editorial styled by Jean Paul Gaultier for Les Echos Magazine, starring one of our muses, Coco Rocha.

Fashion Mag Favorites – Isabeli Fontana in French Vogue

The Western theme is a trend for this spring, but you don’t have to go the camel and turquoise route once again. Get some inspiration from this French Vogue editorial and play the wild west’s villain.

Model – Isabeli Fontana

Fashion Mag Favorites – Alice Dellal in Sang Bleu Magazine

Sang Bleu is a UK magazine that covers fashion/art/contemporary culture/counterculture, and features beautiful black and white photography. This is an editorial spread from 2010 featuring model Alice Dellal, who some people are calling the new Kate Moss these days. These images, absolutely fantastic.
