Amy Winehouse – In Memory of a Brilliant Talent

By now the news of the passing of Amy Winehouse has made its way around the world, and I’m sure many of you are as grief-stricken as I am. This is my little memorial for the talented and tragic Amy.

She was one of the stars who captured the attention of the world. Her music is original and yet, nostalgic. It’s real, it has much emotion and it speaks of a person who isn’t perfect, a person who struggles with many issues, and hurts deeply. And, her music is beautiful. It has brought me a great amount of pleasure, and I feel consoled in that we will always have at least this much of her.

Her impact on fashion was enormous. Everyone knows her look, and a great number of designers and stylists emulated it, over many seasons. She has earned her place as a fashion icon, with the likes of Kurt Cobain, who passed away at the same age as Amy, 27. Actually, 27 is the age at which many great musical icons have left us, including Jimmy Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Jim Morrison. I keep thinking of the lyrics from “Front Row” by Metric,

“Burnout stars they shine so bright…”

Hats Galore

Kate and William’s wedding is over, and the thought most Americans are left with is… Are those things they call “fascinators” normal over there? Well, hats were actually a requirement for the ladies at the royal wedding. In the US, if a girl showed up to a wedding wearing any of those they would be shamed for trying to be Lady Gaga and making a spectacle of themselves on someone else’s special day. However, acceptance of sculptural headpieces in current fashion is spreading, and a RYGGRAD girl should never fear to try on a trend that takes fashion to greater artistic heights. So, today we give you a look at the latest in designer “hats”.

First, here are some creations by Philip Treacy, the designer of most of the hats we saw at the royal wedding.

While most designers don’t include very many headpieces in their ready-to-wear collections, the couture collections have plenty.

Christian Dior Spring 2011 Couture collection, the hats are by Stephen Jones, another star of the hat world.

Givenchy Spring 2011 Couture.

Armani Prive Spring 2011.

Last, perhaps the most youthful and suitable for the street looks, Jean Paul Gaultier Spring 2011 Couture.

RYGGRAD Fall 2011 Photoshoot

We are so excited to finally give everyone a glimpse of the first RYGGRAD collection. As I’ve mentioned in our Twitter feed, we had an amazing photoshoot on the 12th of this month and here are some shots from behind the scenes of that shoot.
Our photographer, Troy Smith. We were very lucky to work with him, he’s the bomb.

Lindsey and Ella, the founders and designers of RYGGRAD, are adjusting the outfit on the model.

Make up and hair was done by Dorit Genazzani, absolute pleasure to work with as well. Check out her site at http://www.makeupbydorit.com/

This is our model Cassandra Smith in her own clothes before the shoot. Not only is this chick an amazing model, she has mad style, and she plays bass in a metal band. She is the ultimate RYGGRAD model! I will most definitely be talking about her again.

Model Muses: Coco Rocha & Abbey Lee Kershaw

Coco exudes confidence with her smoldering eyes.

Australian model, Abbey Lee, is someone to watch. Her first year walking in New York Fashion Week she did 29 shows and closed the show for Rodarte, that was 2009. V Magazine recently dubber her a new supermodel. Oh, and she has a nipple piercing.
